R-trees can be used to store and query sets of point data in two or more dimensions. An easy way to construct and maintain R-trees for two-dimensional points, due to Kamel and Faloutsos, is to keep the points in the order in which they appear along the Hilbert curve. The R-tree will then store bounding boxes of points along contiguous sections of the curve, and the efficiency of the R-tree depends on the size of the bounding boxes—smaller is better. Since there are many different ways to generalize the Hilbert curve to higher dimensions, this raises the question which generalization results in the smallest bounding boxes. Familiar methods, such as the one by Butz, can result in curve sections whose bounding boxes are a factor Ω(2d/2) larger than the volume traversed by that section of the curve. Most of the volume bounded by such bounding boxes would not contain any data points. In this paper we present a new way of generalizing Hilbert’s curve to higher dimensions, which results in much tighter bounding boxes: they have at most 4 times the volume of the part of the curve covered, independent of the number of dimensions. Moreover, we prove that a factor 4 is asymptotically optimal. 1998 ACM Subject Classification E.1 Data Structures, F.2.2 Geometrical problems and computations, H.3.1. Time Complexity of algorithms that update the Sierpiński-like and Modified Hilbert Curves
This paper presents the time complexity of two algorithms that update space-filling curves of adaptively refined domains. The Modified Hilbert (space-filling) Curve was proposed to traverse square-shaped adaptive-refined meshes. Whereas, the Sierpiński-like (space-filling) Curve was proposed in order to traverse triangular-shaped adaptive-refined meshes. Those curves are variations of the names...
متن کامل09 v 1 9 O ct 1 99 6 Hilbert - Kunz Functions of Cubic Curves and Surfaces
We determine the Hilbert-Kunz function of plane elliptic curves in odd characteristic, as well as over arbitrary fields the generalized Hilbert-Kunz functions of nodal cubic curves. Together with results of K. Pardue and P. Monsky, this completes the list of HilbertKunz functions of plane cubics. Combining these results with the calculation of the (generalized) Hilbert-Kunz function of Cayley’s...
متن کاملGeometric Invariant Theory and Moduli Spaces of Pointed Curves
The main result of this dissertation is that Hilbert points parametrizing smooth curves with marked points are GIT-stable with respect to a wide range of linearizations. This is used to construct the coarse moduli spaces of stable weighted pointed curves Mg,A, including the moduli spaces Mg,n of Deligne-Mumford stable pointed curves, as well as ample line bundles on these spaces.
متن کاملHarmonious Hilbert curves and other extradimensional space-filling curves
This paper introduces a new way of generalizing Hilbert’s two-dimensional space-filling curve to arbitrary dimensions. The new curves, called harmonious Hilbert curves, have the unique property that for any d′ < d, the d-dimensional curve is compatible with the d′-dimensional curve with respect to the order in which the curves visit the points of any d′-dimensional axis-parallel space that cont...
متن کاملFinite Hilbert Stability of (bi)canonical Curves
We prove that a generic canonically or bicanonically embedded smooth curve has semistable m Hilbert points for all m ≥ 2. We also prove that a generic bicanonically embedded smooth curve has stable m Hilbert points for all m ≥ 3. In the canonical case, this is accomplished by proving finite Hilbert semistability of special singular curves with Gm-action, namely the canonically embedded balanced...
